The building was designed by the French architect Albert Galleron ( the design was inspired by the old Greek temples ), built on a property that had belonged to the Vacarescu Family and inaugurated in 1888. The overall style is neoclassical, with some more romantic touches.

The Romanian composer George Enescu (1881-1955) conducted on March 1st, 1898 on the scene of the Athenaeum the premiere of his enthusiastically acclaimed “Romanian Poem”.
